ARTICLE . . .

Dogs naturally love to spend time outdoors running, playing and sometimes, if they're well trained, fetching a Frisbee or a stick. The outdoor time is healthy for them to expend energy, get fresh air and socialize with humans and other animals.

First, it should be determined how much time the dog spends outdoors. If it is for several hours a day with limited supervision, the animal should be placed in a yard or outdoor area that is surrounded by an electric dog fence. An electric fence is usually an invisible barrier installed along the property line that emits a small harmless shock to the dog via the collar should they cross the barrier. In most cases, the canine must cross the invisible fence back into their yard to get the shock to cease. While the dog is being trained, it is important that their owner stays outside with the dog as they are learning and testing their boundaries.

The canine that spends a fair amount of time outdoors should also be provided with the basic resources. These include a dish of dry kibble, as the wet kind can attract insects and spoil quickly; a large dish of water; waterproof toys and a doghouse should be provided to the pup. The doghouse should be large enough that the animal can lie down inside, and the ground should be covered with bedding if it is in an area that does not have soft grass.

Dogs that spend time outdoors also need current veterinary care at least two times a year, more often if the canine spends most of their time outside. The veterinarian will examine the animal and ensure that they are disease- and insect-free. They will also make sure the pooch is up to date on any shots and vaccinations needed to keep them from catching common canine maladies. The animal can also be spayed or neutered by the veterinarian to ensure they don't breed with other dogs when they are outside, resulting in puppies that may be too much of a burden to care for to the owner.

In addition to the electric dog fence, water, food, toys, shelter and health care, the animal needs interaction and love from his owner. Even if the dog seems content outside all day, the owner should take time every hour or so to go out and pet or play. They should also be aware of signs that the dog is not content, such as a consistently toppled water dish or chewing on outdoor decks or structures. The best alternative is for the canine to accompany the owner when he is outside, and go back inside when the animal is ready.
